Wellness Projects with Partners
CDC 1801 Grant: Brooklyn Center Community Schools (BCCS) is entering it's third year of a five year grant through the CDC. The CDC 1801 grant is implemented through the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), and is focused on increasing student wellness in schools, through greater access to physical activity opportunities, access to nutritious foods, and management of chronic medical conditions. Read more about the grant here. In the 2020-21 school year we will be using the funding to support programs such as mindful movement opportunities during the school day, nutrition education for students and more. In the 2018-19 school year, through the partnership with MDE, BCCS created a series of videos to support mindful movement in schools.
SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership): SHIP funding is from the MN Legistlature and is distributed through Hennepin County to Brooklyn Center Community Schools. The funding in 2020-21 will support student mental health through mindful movement and partnerships to increase Social Emotional Learning.
Action For Healthy Kids: When distance learning was implemented due to COVID19 in the 2019-20 school year Action For Healthy Kids funding supported the creation of movement videos and sequence graphs for middle and high school students. In the 2018-19 school year the organization funded mindful movement training for staff, resulting in this inspiring story.
Preferred One supports BCCS employees with Wellness Credits that the Wellness Committee uses to supply holistic wellbeing programs and courses, such as movement and fitness, nutrition education, mindfulness sessions and more.
Brooklyn Center Community Schools is continuing the Harmful 7 project, teaming up with the Chef Ann Foundation and the Life Time Foundation to improve the school food in our district. We’re focused on removing the Harmful 7 from our food, increasing scratch cooking, ensuring clean labels* on our packaged products, and sourcing more items from Minnesota producers.
